How to Write a Great Press Release

press-release-newsHow to Write a Great Press Release:

Submitting a press release to an online press release distribution service is a great way to get quality backlinks to your website. If your press release is picked up by journalists, and other media sites, your website could see a significant increase in traffic. It is important to write your news release in the correct format or your release will be rejected.

Here are some tips to make sure your press release gets accepted and distributed:

  • You will need a good catchy title that explains what your news release is all about.
  • Next you will need a short description of what your press release is all about. This is basically a short one or two sentence summary of your news release.
  • Write your press release in the third person. Do not use “I” or “we” unless you are using a quote.
  • Your news release should be newsworthy. It is not a sales letter. Write about your product releases, current events, new information, company news, etc.
  • Answer these questions in your news release: Who? What? Where? When? Why? How? Who Cares?
  • Be brief. Keep your news release under 500 words.
  • Keep it simple and easy to read. Do not use a lot of industry jargon, or not everyone who’s reading it will know what you’re talking about.
  • Avoid a sales pitch and keep your opinions to yourself. Just state the facts.
  • Proofread your release carefully or have someone else read it over. You want to avoid factual errors and spelling errors.
  • Use your keywords, but do not over use them. Your news release will be rejected if you “over stuff” the release with keywords.
  • Include a link to your website. This is very important so you get traffic to your website.
  • You can also include links to your social media accounts and remember to include a link to YouTube if you have a video related to your press release.
  • Include a picture. As they say, “a picture says 1,000 words”.
  • At the end of your news release, include media contact information. Give them as much contact information as you can. Your full name, phone and email address at the very least. If possible also include your address as well.

Once you have your press release ready, you can send it to a distribution service. Try not to send the same news release to more than one or two distribution services. They all want unique content. If you need help creating or distributing your release, we can help. Contact us here.
