Why you Should Have a Privacy Policy on Your Website:
People are very much aware of the importance of protecting their personal information while online. So, it is important for all websites to include a privacy policy on their website. Having one also helps build trust with your website users and potential clients.
Even if you do not collect information from people on your website, you need to have a privacy policy even if it is to simply tell them that you do not collect information. Your visitors will not know you don’t collect their information unless you tell them.
Creating a privacy policy
A privacy policy does not have to be long and involved. A one page privacy policy that is easy to read, without a lot of legal jargon, is all that is needed. When you create your privacy policy include this information:
- An introduction. This should describe what your business is all about and what your website is all about.
- State what information, if any, that you collect. Include information that will be saved on your servers, such as IP addresses and host names.
- State how you store their information. Your clients and visitors will want to know you make every effort to store their personal information in a safe and secure database. So, let them know if their information is stored on your servers, in the cloud, or overseas.
- State if their information will be shared and how it will be shared. In most cases you will want to say something like, ‘we will not share your information with any third party’. However, you may have good reasons to share user information in the day to day running of your website. For example, from providing their postal address to a courier if they have purchased a product, to your bank as they handle credit card purchases.
- Include your contact details to make it as easy as possible for anyone with questions regarding your privacy policy to contact you.
